Back in Prohibition days, the liquor was often so bad they had to mix it with something a little more flavorful to help the “medicine” go down. Thus, the cocktail was born!

Now, here in Tennessee, there’s not a thing wrong with a glass of home-barrelled whiskey, straight up. But the cocktail game is a lot more interesting than it used to be. And some of the tastiest, hippest, fanciest cocktails are poured right here Germantown.

This is a rundown of Germantown’s finest cocktails.

The Mojo at City House is made from Chattanooga Whiskey Reserve, a smooth Tennessee whiskey with just a hint of spice, known for its clean finish. Add nocino, Hoodoo Chicory, Braulio Amaro and serve with lemon.

The food is just as fine. City House is a James Beard-nominated restaurant that has already found its way into the hearts of Nashville with its creative spin on Italian dishes. Kristin Taghon’s 4-star Facebook review beams, “We really enjoyed our food and our service!!! Good cocktails too!! We loved the starter of sausage on black-eyed peas.”

“A Glass of absinthe is as poetical as anything in the world.” ~ Oscar Wilde

The Green Hour is named for the murky green spirit rumored to have driven Victorian deviants mad as hatters. The absinthe is prepared in the traditional way, tempered by ice water that is poured from a French fountain over a sugar cube resting neatly in a spoon. The legend goes that revelers who imbibed this classic cocktail saw “La Fee Verte” (the green fairy).

Yelper Kristin Marie S. gives her ringing endorsement for Green Hour: “ Germantown’s best-kept secret! The Green Hour is doing something truly special. Their cocktails are unique.”

“Vitas & The Element” at  Rolf and Daughters is another Tennessee cocktail that starts with more of that delicious Chattanooga Whiskey Reserve. They mix in cacao, China-China, hibiscus and egg for a drink that’s as fancy as it is familiar.

And the food has yelpers (like Stephanie J.) yelping with glee: “One of the most special meals I have ever had! So happy to discover restaurants of this caliber in Nashville after moving here from the Bay Area.”

We do fancy drinks the Nashville way! An alchemy of both poise and grace, both elegance, and earthiness, Germantown’s cocktails scene is top shelf!
